Suddenly Last Summer
Written by Tennessee Williams
Designed for: Performance Place, Catawba Theater
Model Scale: 1’ -1/4'“
Artist Statement:
For this show I based the design on a garden conservatories, 1920s New Orleans architecture, and swamps. The plants and statues were inspired by human body parts and bones. If looked at closely the trees have screaming faces to adopt the concept of the setting description describe in the script “There are massive tree-flowers that suggest organs of a body, torn out, still blistering with undried blood…”
the concept of the design was to place the audience uneasily close to the actors, to feel as if they are listening and watching something that they shouldn’t be apart of while witnessing this family feud.
